“there are times when children need the extra help that home-schooling provides”
There is no question that, in principle, traditional schooling is better for normal children than home-schooling: children need to grow-up with other children, to learn the rough and tumble of being with each other, making friends and having other children to compete with. And they benefit so much from the fun of playing games and having the camaraderie of taking part in teams with other children.
However, there are times when children need extra help; when they are having trouble with a particular subject; when they are bolshie and are unwilling to defer to authority; where there is strife in the family and many other reasons. In such cases hiring a residential tutor to live full-time with the family for a limited time to help sort out the child’s problems can be invaluable. Long-term one-on-one home-schooling can make a normal child very precious and spoilt – not a pleasant trait. But a few months’ home-schooling can be an invaluable asset and bolster a child’s confidence and help make the return to school something to look forward to.
When a child is dysfunctional in some way long-term home-schooling may be preferable to sending a child to a school with other dysfunctional children. In this case, a qualified tutor may be the answer and may be preferable to home-schooling by the parents themselves. And schooling on Zoom is unfortunately useless in such instances. Tutors are useful for taking an objective view, not contaminated by the emotions of the family. Tutors from England has supplied many tutors with great success for these rare occasions where long-term home-schooling has been preferable to traditional schooling.
