“I insisted that her mother turn off her constant vigilance while I was living in the household as her tutor”
This was one of the most interesting tutoring jobs that I ever had. In fact the solution was very easy to find once I had discovered the cause of this girl’s anxiety.
I was asked to go to India to tutor a girl aged 17 who had “learning disabilities”. She was an absolutely sweet girl and we immediately took to each other. She started to confide in me and I soon realised the cause of the trouble. Her mother tracked everything she did from her mobile telephone and her mother knew exactly where she was every moment of every day and night. Her mother’s reason for doing this was to protect her daughter from any dangerous situation she might get into.
Instead of this, her daughter became paranoid that her mother was going to disapprove of everything she did. Her schoolwork suffered and the school informed her parents that she had a learning disability.
From the moment I arrived in the household I could not find that she had any disability at all. Her mother’s constant surveillance of everything caused her to be so apprehensive that she was unable to study well. She needed to be allowed to make her own decisions, make some mistakes, learn from them and show her mother that she could be trusted to have good judgement and intuition.
I insisted that her mother turn off the constant vigilance while I was there; I told her I would be constantly with her daughter from dawn to bedtime and that I would protect her from any irreversible situation. Eventually her mother conceded and Rhadika immediately became a different person, once the surveillance was removed. Her mother learned to give her daughter credit and recognize that she was growing up.
I spent a very happy three months with Rhadika. During that time I brought her up-to-date with all the school work that she had fallen behind with and her whole attitude to school and studying was radically changed for the better.
Her parents were so relieved to find out that there was nothing wrong with Rhadika that they promised they would never track her whereabouts again. I have kept in touch with Rhadika and this has remained the case. FL
